Hi Rob here...
I'm a massive social butterfly, an avid tech fan, and my family is extremely important to me!
Alongside my personal life, I've had lots of success, winning many awards and helping thousands of businesses in the process.
My greatest success has been SnappyAds, a multi-award-winning video production business based right here in the Midlands.
I've had the privilege of collaborating with major brands like the NHS, Jessops, and Coventry University, to name a few.
But this is not where I started, so let's rewind the clock and delve deeper into my journey and how we got here.
I think you'll find it fascinating!
The 'Employed Years'
I started my career in retail as a 16-year-old working at Card Factory back in 2009, and I absolutely loved it.
£3.48 an hour was my wage back then, which seemed like a lot of money to a 16-year-old... (I used to earn £5 a week delivering papers!)
My first manager was called Sue, and I learned a lot from her. She taught me the basics of customer service, how to work quickly and efficiently, and how to work together as a team during a time when Funky Pigeon wasn't even a thing yet!
While working at Card Factory, I was still at university, so I'll come back to this part in a little while.
The 'University Years'
While working at Card Factory, I was still at university.
At the time, the government was encouraging new enterprises to set up. After seeing a poster on a wall, something bugged me to think,
"I have to apply for that."
I set off that evening, drafting up all the paperwork.
After pitching to a panel of business professionals, I was accepted and welcomed onboard. This was the official start of my business. (It was only 2014!)
I was given lots of business advice through the SPEED Plus Programme. But I needed a camera of my own. Up until this point, I'd borrowed others, not being able to afford one.
So I applied for my grant and went into Jessops to buy one.
This was where my employed life would quickly change.
The 'Jessops Era'
After buying my camera, I met Wendy.
She said, "You seem to know your stuff!"
Lo and behold, the next thing you know, I had a job!
You see, Sue became the cornerstone of my professional development, and lo and behold, my six years of working for Card Factory was over.
Jessops happened totally by accident, but it would change the whole course of my journey (and ultimately what followed).
It was my dream job for years.
Until one day, I was selling a camera to a gentleman who, after some general chat, discovered I loved filming videos!
He said, "I think you'd be a great fit in my organisation." It turns out he was a TV director at a local TV network.
So I applied.
Within two weeks, I got that job too, as a camera operator working nights, streaming LIVE to the US!
The 'Gemporia Days'
It was tough hours, but I loved every moment of it. Everything I studied for at university became a reality. I was now part of a live TV studio crew at the age of 24!
It was incredible.
But I wasn't ready to leave Jessops just yet. I worked both jobs alongside each other for years.
Over the years, I got promoted to TV Director and then Broadcast Video Editor.
I also toured the whole of the UK with Jessops, filming content for lots of their courses. I learned how to 'sell' using video.
Life couldn't have been better! But I still had this entrepreneurial itch that I never quite scratched back from my university days.
And now it was going to surface, big style...
Redundancy Stikes...
The day came that I was dreading: I got a letter saying our store was closing, and within a month, my life at Jessops was over.
I still speak to my colleagues to this day, and it was the most enjoyable job I ever had. But it wasn’t meant to be!
Someone, somewhere, was telling me to not settle and to “keep looking.”
Redundancy Stikes (again!)
It was now 2021, and lo and behold, COVID happened.
I was off work for six months on furlough after being defined as high-risk and asthmatic.
It gave me a lot of thinking time, and I needed it. Working two jobs day and night for years took its toll.
Soon after my return, after eight years of working at my dream job in TV, the redundancy card was given to me for the second time.
I was shocked but not unhappy; I was ready for my next challenge. I wanted to have a bigger impact, and I knew that whatever I did, I wanted to make a difference.
That university itch was finally going to be scratched.
So with my mediocre payout... and envelope in hand, I left for the last time.
With no salary and, at this point no real business...
It was time to start over!
